Charybdis:
A
Greek mythological creature inhabiting the (modern-day) strait of Messina between
the mainland of Italy and the island of Sicily. Homer's account of Charybdis,
and her partner Scylla can be found in the Odyssey- Charybdis would sink ships
through her whirlpool action. She remains the origin of the modern-day ocean
current known for its tumultuous motion. I have traveled the treacherous strait
of Messina by boat to the island of Sicily- a turbulent ride.
