Masters of Fine Art Exhibition

Glass has an unparalleled metaphorical capacity. Often referred to as a super-cooled liquid, it can capture movement and depth like no other substance outside of water; freezing a split second in space and in time. Glass has a timelessness to it, but is ironically a time-sensitive material. A few seconds can determine the difference between fluidity and immobility in the working process.

This body of work started in winter of 2002 as I was exploring glass' potential to suggest movement in a lyrical way reminiscent of rhythm and sound. Trained as a musician, I experienced music as more than just sound. My fingers understood music tactilely, and my mind recognized its language of symbols. Music moved before my eyes as if it was visual and occupied space as well as time.

I was inspired by particular musical compositions which I later came to recognize as the embodiment of theoretical principles such as variation and repetition. Music is fractal in essence, a derivation of pattern from single units. Zoom in on a fractal and you see similar patterns on an individual scale as you do when you pan out and view the whole. Music and rhythm, in all of their complexity, possess this same part-to-whole duality as single notes both subordinate and assert their autonomy in a musical landscape.

This exhibition allows rhythm to occupy space as well as time, and sculptural art to capture the passage of time as well as space.
