Sun
Rising Over the Tundra
I
lived on an island off the coast of Maine during Maine 's worst winter in 79
years (December 2003- March 2004). The landscape was beautiful, compelling,
and very desolate. With temperatures and wind chills consistently hovering between
20 and 30 below, the land became quiet and the bays froze over. The sun was
rarely a force that touched the humans and animals of the island. With the grasslands
frozen in motion, one rare sunrise I caught a glimpse of a ray of sun rising
over the barren landscape, changing the hue from blue to yellow. In a moment,
it was gone.
